The correct spelling is “офшор”.

Offshore or offshor? How to spell it correctly?

“Offshore” comes from the English word Offshore (off+shore). This word can now confidently be called a loanword. However, in Russian, it began to be mentioned with a single letter “F”. Let’s refer to the dictionary from 1999 (Russian Spelling Dictionary edited by V.V. Lopatin). “Ofshor” is spelled with one letter “F”. Websites have even started to be registered with a transliteration into Latin from Russian – “офшор” – as “ofshor”. For example, ofshor dot ru.

However, businessmen and bankers, financiers and auditors, accountants and secretaries, IT specialists still say and use “offshore”.

Business usage prevails, and the word is more often searched for with two “ff”s. Google and Yandex search engines clearly indicate this.

Interestingly, the word “offshore” is often used incorrectly not only in Russian. Google queries also feature variants like Ofshore banking and Ofshore company.

Also noteworthy is the emergence of the word “Onshore” against the backdrop of the use of “Offshore”.
