If a citizen of the Republic of Moldova changes their surname in a marriage concluded in a foreign country, after re-registering the marriage in Moldova, they are obliged to replace their ID card with a new one (with the spouse’s surname).
Sometimes it is necessary to re-register the marriage and divorce, in which the citizen of Moldova returns to her surname before marriage. If these are re-registered simultaneously, the citizen of Moldova will not need to obtain a new ID card (at least a temporary one). That is, if only the marriage is re-registered, the citizen of Moldova will have to obtain at least a temporary ID card to re-register the divorce.
In some countries (e.g., Israel), the court’s decision regarding the divorce does not indicate that the spouse has changed her surname to her pre-marriage surname. Therefore, it is necessary to re-register the marriage and divorce simultaneously (to avoid the need for obtaining a temporary ID card). However, the citizen of Moldova will have to personally submit an application to change her surname to her pre-marriage surname.
