Transcription of documents. Translation of documents

Document Transcription. Document Translation

What is transcription? It is the letter-by-letter conversion of first names, last names, and patronymics into another language, taking into account linguistic rules. Special attention should be paid to the pronunciation of letter combinations and the letters themselves, as the rules for writing sounds with letters differ in different languages. For example, in the surname Cheban: English – Cheban, German – Tscheban, Romanian – Ceban.

When converting foreign documents into Romanian, Moldovan, or other countries’ documents, it is often necessary to correctly translate the first name, last name, and patronymic. However, it is essential to remember that, according to translation rules, paradoxically, first names, patronymics, and last names are not translated. These data are transcribed.

Names with dual spelling in English (for example, in a Ukrainian passport) and in Romanian often create confusion in practice. For instance, Alexey (English) and Alexei (Romanian). Such discrepancies cannot be called a mistake. However, such discrepancies can become a reason for the refusal to accept documents by a foreign body or even in the home country.

The transcription of documents into Romanian is carried out according to the rules established by the legislation of the Republic of Moldova. These rules can only be circumvented if the official is incompetent and does not know them. However, in this case, something else may also occur. If an official is incompetent, they may violate the rules even when there is a legal requirement to write “correctly.”

Transcription of foreign documents for Romania sometimes raises questions. For example, there may be one spelling in the passport, a different spelling in the Moldovan ID card, and a third spelling in the birth certificate. Only professionals can provide guidance and assistance here.
