The fact that she left as a child and became a citizen of another country does not deprive her of her historical right. Under the new legislation she is fully entitled to citizenship through <strong>recognition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What awaits her.<\/strong> The new rules require her to prove her readiness to become part of society. Anna will have to come to Moldova in person (or apply at a consulate) and pass a mandatory exam on the Romanian language (basic conversational level) and the provisions of the Constitution. She does not need to renounce her current citizenship \u2014 Moldova allows multiple citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Documents.<\/strong> Besides passports, the key document is her birth certificate. Since Anna changed her surname several times through marriage, she will need a perfect chain of marriage and divorce certificates. This gives Maxim the right to citizenship <strong>by descent<\/strong> (also through the recognition procedure).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What awaits him.<\/strong> Maxim is of legal age, so the same strict requirements apply to him as to his mother: language, exams, in-person application. The law makes no concessions for students or young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The hidden nuance \u2014 security.<\/strong> In his autobiography Maxim must describe in detail his relationship to military service in his country of current citizenship. The security services carefully check young men for service in foreign armed forces. Concealing this information is guaranteed to lead to a refusal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Path 3. Naturalization through marriage \u2014 Timur&#8217;s case<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Timur has neither territorial nor blood ties to Moldova. The law requires the marriage to a Moldovan citizen to last at least 3 years, and during those 3 years the spouse must legally and continuously reside in Moldova with a residence permit. The plan: wait until Anna gets her passport \u2192 move to Moldova \u2192 obtain a residence permit through family reunification \u2192 live there for 3 years \u2192 prove legal income \u2192 learn the language \u2192 submit the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Path 4. General naturalization \u2014 Elena and Vladimir&#8217;s case<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation of the older generation is the most complex. Elena has long been divorced from Ion \u2014 the right to citizenship through marriage is lost. Neither she nor Vladimir has blood ties to the republic. For them only <strong>naturalization on general grounds<\/strong> is available: a residence permit and continuous residence in Moldova for at least 10 years with official income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The only relief is for Elena.<\/strong> If her daughter Anna becomes a citizen and moves to Moldova, Elena will be able to obtain a residence permit through reunification with her daughter. In that case the residence requirement is reduced to 3 years of living together with a child who is a citizen. She will still have to pass the language exam (except in the case of severe medical contraindications confirmed by a commission).
