Before making a payment, you can check the correctness of someone else’s IBAN using the tools of the National Bank of Moldova — this is cheaper than tracing a transfer that went “nowhere”.

For an incoming payment from abroad, three things are usually enough: the recipient’s IBAN, the bank’s SWIFT/BIC and the exact company name as in the register extract. A correspondent bank is not always needed — get its details from your bank; they differ by currency.

SEPA: euro transfers under EU rules already work

This is the main change for foreign economic activity in recent years. Moldova was admitted to the Single Euro Payments Area on 6 March 2025, and from 6 October 2025 it has been operationally connected: euro transfers between a Moldovan account and accounts in the EU go under the same rules and tariffs as within the European Union.

According to National Bank data for the first ten months of operation: about 8 out of 10 euro transactions already go through SEPA, the volume of payments grew from 9.3 to 14.6 billion euros, and businesses and citizens saved around 13.2 million euros in fees. A transfer that previously cost from 20 to 150 euros now costs around one euro.

Practical takeaways for a company: keeping a euro account in Moldova has become noticeably cheaper than paying for SWIFT transfers; however, the specific tariffs, crediting times, and available schemes differ from bank to bank — clarify before choosing a bank, not after. The requisites for a SEPA transfer are the same IBAN and BIC.

Money guarantee: 200,000 lei, including legal entities

The Deposit Guarantee Fund in the banking system covers funds in national and foreign currency, residents and non-residents, individuals and legal entities. From January 1, 2025, the maximum payout amount per depositor is 200,000 lei regardless of the number of accounts and currency. The threshold is being gradually raised toward the European level.

For businesses, this means a simple thing: balances above this amount are a matter of the reliability of the specific bank, not of the state guarantee. Therefore, large turnovers are usually spread across two banks — an operating bank and a reserve bank.

How to open a company account in Moldova: procedure and timelines

Temporary account for share capital is opened before company registration — processing takes from half an hour to an hour.

Permanent accounts are opened just as quickly, but are not activated immediately: the bank reports the information to the State Tax Service, and account operations become possible after its confirmation (Art. 167 of the Tax Code). A bank has a SWIFT/BIC and a two-character identifier (AG, ML, VI, MO, etc.) that is part of each of its clients’ IBANs. The eight-character code indicates the head office; if the counterparty requires eleven characters,
XXX
is added.

Can a company account be opened remotely without coming to Moldova?

We handle company registration and preparation of all documents by power of attorney. For the actual opening of the account, the bank generally requests a one-time personal appearance of the account manager. Further work is done via internet banking and a representative by power of attorney. Conditions differ from bank to bank, so we agree on the bank in advance.

Why is the account open, but payments are not going through?

Because the account is activated after confirmation by the State Tax Service — the bank is required to transmit information about the opened account, and until confirmation transactions are impossible. This usually takes 2–5 business days. This is a normal procedure, not a bank problem or an error in the documents.

Does SEPA work for a Moldovan account?

Yes, from October 6, 2025. Euro transfers between Moldova and the EU follow the rules of the Single Euro Payments Area: faster and several times cheaper than SWIFT. The available schemes, tariffs and crediting times depend on the specific bank — check when opening the account.

Are funds of legal entities in accounts guaranteed?

Yes. The Deposit Guarantee Fund covers funds of individuals and legal entities, residents and non-residents, in any currency — up to 200,000 lei per depositor in one bank (from January 1, 2025). Amounts above the limit are not covered by the state guarantee.

Which bank should you choose for business in Moldova?

It depends on the task. If you need a nationwide network and a full range of services — maib or Moldindconbank. Remote operations and a clear approach to non-residents — in our experience, OTP Bank. European counterparties and SME lending — ProCredit Bank or EXIMBANK. Romanian vector — Victoriabank. Small business with non-standard situations — FinComBank or ENERGBANK. We select a bank based on the ownership structure and planned turnover before submitting documents.

Do I need to notify the tax office about opening an account?

To the company itself — no: the bank transmits the information, and it is at this stage that the account receives confirmation. A separate procedure is needed for accounts opened abroad — they have their own reporting rules, and these should be clarified before opening.

Can a non-resident individual open an account?

Yes, banks open accounts for non-residents, but with enhanced verification: proof of identity, source of funds, purpose of opening the account, sometimes documents showing connection with Moldova (residence permit, real estate, business). We select the package and bank for the specific situation.

Our assistance with banks

We have been working with Moldovan banks since 2005 and know exactly what each of them asks a new client. We help: choose a bank based on the ownership structure and turnover, prepare a compliance package, legalize and translate the documents of a foreign founder, draft a power of attorney to meet the bank’s requirements, schedule an appointment for the account signatory, and accompany them with a specialist at the meeting.
