1. Lack of awareness among officials who require an apostille or legalization.
\nIf you have been asked for a birth, marriage, or divorce certificate with an apostille, you should familiarize yourself with the list of countries that are part of the Apostille Convention. Very often, government officials from CIS countries mistakenly believe that if countries are members of the Apostille Convention, an apostille is mandatory. However, some have not even heard of the CIS agreement. The fact is that under this agreement, legalization of documents from another CIS country is not required in all CIS countries. The only requirement is to provide documents from the country of origin that are of a new format.<\/p>\n
Our agency is often contacted by people requesting an apostille on documents for Russia. However, this is not required. It is sufficient to order a new-format document and have it translated into Russian.<\/p>\n

Remember! Documents obtained in European Union countries that are part of the Apostille Convention can only be apostilled in those countries. Moldova does not have the right to place an apostille on these documents. This is because the government of the country where the document was issued confirms the legitimacy of the document for Moldovan authorities through the Apostille.
\nIf you have a document from a country not part of the Apostille Convention, such a document requires legalization in the country where you obtained it. The legalization process may differ in each country. However, there is a general rule: legalization of this document at the nearest consulate of the Republic of Moldova in that country or in a neighboring state.<\/p>\n
3. Client deception. Providing false information.We would like to draw special attention to incidents occurring in Transnistria. Local translation bureaus do not inform PMR citizens that translating a certificate or other document before legalization or apostille certification is not allowed for other countries. This would be a waste of time and money. There is even a translation bureau in the PMR named “Apostille.” It immediately becomes clear that this name misleads people. Apostilles can only be affixed by authorized state bodies of the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n
It is also worth noting the concealment of information by some Moldovan translation bureaus. A client brings a document that has not been legalized in its country of origin for translation. They are not even informed that such a translation will not be recognized in Moldova.<\/p>\n
